This paper intends to expound that the original word for the verb “killing” in Hakka language is actually 「犀」(屖)instead of 「治」, by examining their shapes, phonics, definition and lexeme. The five parts in this paper are as follows:
I.) Preface
II.) Studying the meaning of the word「治」: stating the root of 「治」-「台」has no meaning of “killing”. Therefore「治-fish」is not“killing fish”, the 「治」 from 「治 -pig 」、「治 -dog 」 , all means ”curing”.
III.) Studying the original word for the verb “kill” ts, ï 5 / t∫,i5 is「屖」or「犀刂」:stating「遲」and「犀」are from the same source, the original words「屖」,「屖」、「犀」、「陵遲」all have the meaning of killing.
IV.)「夷」、「弟」are also the original words of “killing”: stating the word「刣」is a slang, possibly a misuse of the word「剃」.
V.) Conclusion: stating research on original Hakka words is also a way to study Hakka culture. The word「犀刂」can be traced all the way to the ancient Chinese inscriptions on tortoise shells. The usage is long standing and well established. The word「治」definitely cannot be used for “killing”.
